In both cases pyrite grains generally range in size from 0.1 to 0.9 mm in diameter. Shale-enclosed spheres, however, have organic ''skins'' that are of amber color in thin section (Schieber 1996) and behave isotropically under crossed polarizers, whereas pyrite grains in lags generally lack this organic ''skin''.
